Drew Brees vs. Philip Rivers

On a bad team it's tough to find a key position battle, but we'll go with the quarterback spot. Brees is the incumbent, but after a poor season in 2003, the Chargers acquired Rivers in a draft-day trade with the Giants. He doesn't have a huge arm and his delivery is awkward, but he knows where to go with the football. He is the son of a coach, which shows up on the field. Brees seemed to lose confidence last year before he was benched in favor of Doug Flutie. He is 4-16 in his last 20 starts, but that says a bunch about the team, too. He looks more like a backup than a starter.

If you asked LaDainian Tomlinson what he’s most proud of, you’d expect him to talk about his record-setting accomplishments on the field or making the Pro Bowl in his second NFL season. But what he’s most proud of are the things football has enabled him to do off the field. The first thing football allowed him to do was purchase brand-new homes for his mother, Loreane, and sister, Londria, in Dallas. It was a dream come true for Loreane, who raised three children on her own. Tomlinson took things one step further though. In addition to the homes, he also purchased a pair of vacant buildings in Dallas, one for his mother’s real estate company, Eagle Lending, and the other for his sister’s day-care center named Miracles and Blessings.
